How You Can Afford a Boat

Imagine the joy on your kids face when you tell them that they are going for a boat ride.  Remember the times growing up and the fun you had fishing with your Dad.  Think back to that time when you were learning how to water ski.  Realize now that boating is not reserved for the wealthy. You can afford a boat.  Here I will show you how.

Larry Rains from Yacht World recently wrote a brief article on his blog for the marine industry.  He said that dealers and boat builders should put more effort into emphasizing that there is an entry level boat available for any pocket book.  There are indeed several ways for you to get into boating that can fit your budget.

There are hundreds of used boats on the market in your area in the 16 to 20 foot range that can be purchased for a few thousand dollars.  Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) made by companies such as Nautica, Novurania and Zodiak are a great option.  An 18 - 20 foot RIB is light enough to trailer behind most vehicles, are extremely safe and seaworthy, and can be stored for a couple hundred dollars a month at a public storage facility if you have no room at home.

The Freedom Boat Club has been around since 1989 and has 45 locations in the USA.  Boat clubs are an affordable alternative to buying and maintaining your own boat.  For a monthly fee you have access to a fleet of boats.  You reserve the boat you want in advance.  You show up at the dock with the kids and the dog and the boat is clean and fueled and waiting for you.  At the end of the day the club staff help you secure the boat and get it ready for the next member.  You simply tie up and walk away.

The marine lending companies have been working hard to keep boat ownership affordable in the current economic climate.  Seacoast, Newcoast, and Sterling among other are offering low interest rates and can help you calculate what you can afford.  They will finance both new and used boats.  A consultation is free and can be done over the phone or by email.

There are even resources online to help you convince a skeptical spouse of the benefits and affordability of getting a boat for the family.  Check out their videos and testimonials at Discover Boating.

Take the dream and make it a reality for 2009.  Introduce your family to a safe and enjoyable lifestyle that they will never forget.  You can relive the joy of boating and the water that you knew when you were growing up.  Offer that joy now to the next generation.

Fake Hydrostatic Release Units Identified

FAKES: Swedish company Hammar says there are some dangerous counterfeit copies of its Hydrostatic Release Unit, the Hammar H20. The company says to an untrained eye the copy is almost identical to the original product, with Hammar’s logo and address on the labels.

But Hammar says the fakes differ in one very important aspect from the original genuine part – they don’t work.

Hammar says it has tested several of the copies and not a single one of them worked properly according to SOLAS specifications – the fake H20 will definitely not release a liferaft or an EPIRB, says the company. ‘We see this as a very serious situation,’ said Hammar.

Owners can check quickly on whether their products have the correct genuine Hammar part. ‘If you check on the underside of the Hammar H20 (picture 1) you should be able to find five fabrication marks on all units produced since April 2006. The company says units produced before that date have only two fabrication marks.

The fabrication mark on the upper side of the unit must always point directly towards the rope (picture 2).

Hammar says the serial number and production date can always be verified by contacting CM Hammar at info@cmhammar.com

Hammar 20 Hydrostatic Release kits are sold by West Marine here:West Marine
West Marine does a wonderful job of selling quality merchandise and backing it up. To be on the safe side you should check your Hammar 20 unit no matter where you purchased it from. It is not practical for any retailer to closely check each one of the products that they sell for authenticity. The onus is on you to keep your crew safe.

This may affect you and not just the folks in Sweden.  Check the unit on your boat before you do anything else the next time you get onboard.

Be careful out there!

Foreclosed and Seized Boats

Foreclosed and seized boats offer a great opportunity for someone who wants to buy a boat well below market value.  They can range in size from trailer boats to large yachts.  This article will show you how to find and buy a foreclosed or seized boat in the United States.

Boat foreclosures are at an all time high in this country because of the current economic crisis.  There has been a surge of interest from overseas buyers especially in Eastern Europe and South America.  Some will buy blocks of boats for export to their home country which are then offered for sale at prices that can result in substantial profits.  Individual buyers have been successful as well in finding a bargain for personal use and well below what they would pay for the same boat back home.

Banks often take possession of a boat for non or late payment of a loan.  The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regularly seize boats that have been apprehended for drug running.  Other government agencies arrest boats for illegal immigrant smuggling, non payment of taxes and a variety of other reasons.

Boats that are foreclosed on by banks are typically assigned to a company for resale.  These boats are often offered for sale at a price that will recover the balance of the outstanding loan.  The asking prices are usually well below market value of the vessel.  If the boat has been on the market for an extended period and has not sold the vessel will be put up for auction.

Boats that have been seized by law enforcement are not offered for sale until court proceedings have concluded.  These vessels are then put up for auction.  That auction can be held within a day or two after release by the courts.

You can take advantage of these great opportunities if you know where to look.  There are a small number of companies that specialize in the sale of foreclosed and seized boats.  They often work for a set fee rather than commission.  But this is where it can get difficult for you.

These companies usually have a sale or brokerage company as well.  These separate companies have a distinct advantage in their close relationship with the company in charge of selling these foreclosed and seized boats.  The sales people in these companies have a long standing list of clients looking for bargains.  If you are not at the top of their list you have a distinct disadvantage.

Your best option is to find a yacht broker in the United States that you trust and who has a relationship with one or more of these companies.  The broker you choose should know what is available and when the boats will be put on the market.  This can be tricky for example with a yacht that has been seized by the DEA.  It is difficult to predict when a particular boat will be released by the courts.  Timing in these circumstances is critical if you wish to be part of the auction process which can occur unexpectedly.

Contact me if you want more information on how to take advantage of these amazing buying opportunities.  You can save a lot of money and possibly even profit from foreclosed and seized boats in the United States.

Save a Family Members Life

Raymarine’s LifeTag system should be on your boat now. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, don’t do anything until you get this for your boat. Cheapest life insurance you can get for your family members.

Raymarine Lifetag
Raymarine Lifetag

This system can be used for people and pets. The system uses what Raymarine calls “LifeTags”. These little units weigh 1.5 ounces and are about the size of a small iPOD. They communicate with a wireless base station onboard the boat. If the signal is disrupted by distance (around 30′) or the unit is submerged in water a very loud and very annoying alarm goes off. That usually means that Fido or somebody else went for an unexpected dip.

LifeTag can trigger the automatic man overboard in Raymarine’s SeaTalk-compatible chartplotters, radars and instruments, and the SeaTalk devices can display the lat/lon of the person as a waypoint. In other words if its dark or the seas are really nasty you can actually find them, get back to the person and fish them out.

The basic unit includes two LifeTags, the base station, the alarm module, batteries (yes it even comes with batteries!), arm bands and a hand book. This for only around $650 on this site. You can expand this system for up to sixteen crew members/pets.

You can get it now by clicking here: Raymarine Lifetag Wireless Mob W/Base Station And 2 Life Tag – Model E12185 Parts

Cheap insurance and a perfect gift for your family and friends.

Your welcome,
David

Shopping Made Easy

You may have noticed while shopping online lately that it’s not so easy.  Say you are looking for a Garmin GPS or a pair of deck shoes.  You go to Amazon or Best Buy and land on their front page and your mind goes, “Whoa”.  After your eyes take in all of the options before you you finally find the search bar.  The drop down menus were too confusing.

Here is a better idea.  Try Gifts4Boaters.com where you can look for electronics, shoes, clothes, cameras and camcorders, books, lcd TV’s, gift baskets and more.  You get free shipping on thousands of items if you order before December 17.  There are plenty of bargains and heavily discounted items as well.
